The broken column tombstone for Leola & "Sonny" Usener at Der Stadt Friedhof Cemetery in Fredericksburg TX is readily apparent in the newer section of the cemetery to the west of the old section.
We are always a lttle curious about folks who have interesting tombstines in the cemetery, so we sometimes do a little digging on ancestry.com.
We found Leola Usener's death certificate, which lists her cause of death as brain injuries due to a skull fracture she received in a car accident the day before. Her father is Herman Usener and mother is Dora Priess.
Her brother "Sonny" -- AKA Victor Karl Usener -- died in 1957 of cirrhosis of the liver and kidney due to alcoholism, which he had suffered from for years. He was a veteran of WWII. The poarents names are the same as for Leola.
In his application for a US Government headstone, Victor Usener enlisted in the Army on 17 Feb 1942, and was honorably discharged on 21 Dec 1945. He received the Enlisted Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He served as a corporal at the 187th General Hospital.
