The Théâtre des Célestins is one of the only theaters in France, with the Comédie Française and the Théâtre de l'Odéon, to celebrate 200 years of drama.
The name of theater comes from Celestine convent that occupied the site from 1407 to 1789.
A first theater, called Théatre des Variétés, was inaugurated April 9, 1792. but in 1871, a fire completely destroyed the building.
The present building is the work of Gaspard André, following a competition organized in 1873.
A major renovation was made in the years 2002 to 2005.
Famous actors have played like Sarah Bernhardt and Jean Marais. Napoleon was a spectator when he came to Lyon.
Le théâtre des Célestins est un des seuls théâtres en France, avec la Comédie-Française et le théâtre de l'Odéon, à fêter plus de 200 ans d'art dramatique.
Son nom vient du couvent de célestins qui occupait l'emplacement de 1407 à 1789.
Un premier théâtre, appelé Théâtre des Variétés, est inauguré le 9 avril 1792.
Le bâtiment actuel est l'œuvre de Gaspard André, à la suite d'un concours organisé en 1873.
En 1871, un incendie détruit entièrement l'édifice, devenu d'ailleurs vétuste et trop petit.
Une rénovation majeure a été réalisée dans les années 2002 à 2005.
Des acteurs célèbres y ont joué comme Sarah Bernhardt ou Jean Marais. Napoléon y a été spectateur.
