A plaque by the church on the corner of Church Street and Green Hill, Hathern.
The plaque reads:
"The Parish Church is built of Charnwood stone. Parts of the structure date back to Saxon and Norman times. Most of it, however, was built in the 14th century, although was much atlered ans rebuilt in 1861-2 by rector Edward Smythies. The oldest parts remaining are the tower, which contains a peal of eight bells, the interior walls supported by the arches between nave and aisles, the priests door in the south wall of the chancel, and a Saxon font. The north trancept was added in memory of Rev. Smythies' predecessor, the Rev. Edward Thomas March-Philipps, rector from 1808 to 1859, who, many believe, was responsible for creating the legend of "Wicked Hathern"."
