The current Hotel 1898 is a neoclassical building designed in 1880 by architect Josep Oriol Mestres as a private residence of the family of Antonio Lopez y Lopez, Marques de Comillas, founders of the Transatlantic Company. In 1929, the building became the headquarters of the Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas after undergoing extensive refurbishment by Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal and Josep Maria Rivas.
Hotel 1898, owned by Núñez i Navarro Hotels, is named after the year in which the Spanish colonies, Cuba and the Philippines became independent. The rehabilitation of the building was undertaken by a team of experts from Núñez i Navarro who made only two years to restore the building and transform it into the modern-day Hotel 1898. which opened in 2005.
The Hotel offers 169 rooms, 3 of which are Suites Colonial with terrace and private pool, a large terrace on the seventh floor, with heated pool and bar-restaurant, a Spa and an indoor pool in the basement and on the first floor, the Restaurant H1898.
