Entre août 1943 et la fin de la guerre en Europe, des B-24D spécialement modifiés sont utilisés dans des missions classées secrètes. Dans un projet commun entre l'Army Air Forces et l'Office of Strategic Services (OSS), appelé « opération Carpetbagger », les pilotes et des équipages volent sur des B-24D modifiés, peints avec une peinture noir brillant anti-projecteur, pour ravitailler les troupes au sol partout dans l'Europe occupée par l'Allemagne.

Between August 1943 and the end of the war in Europe, specially modified B-24D are used in classified missions. In a joint project between the Army Air Forces and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), called "Operation Carpetbagger", pilots and crews flying on modified B-24D, painted with a glossy black anti-searchlight paint to supply ground troops throughout Europe occupied by Germany.
January 7, 1944, a B-24 D Liberator, the "Los Angeles City Limits" crashed here.
