"Time has not stood still in Huis ter Heide - the hamlet first mentioned on a map in 1840. Many farms have been changed into residences and the farmers who are still active have modernized and enlarged their businesses. The small school has become a residence. In the distance Assen is advancing. The roads have become busier.
But those who have an eye for it, see much of the history back in the landscape. The canals, the structures in the landscape, the old lock. Nature is still plentiful. A stone's throw away lies a nature reserve the size of the city of Utrecht: the Fochteloërveen, the largest living raised bog in the Netherlands. Adjacent to this are the Esmeer and the Norger".
