When Henry Clay passed on June 29, 1852 the citizens of Pottsville, PA decided to honor the great Senator.
Tradition goes that Senator Henry Clay favored a tariff on coal which helped the anthracite region.
Seven masons completed the base on November 27, 1852. Because the total cost of the monument was $7,151.00, it wasn't completed until June 14, 1855. It took seven men to hoist the statue one hour and fifty minutes. A grand dedication took place on July 4, 1855 with the Honorable Charles Gibbon of Philadelphia being the main orator.
As the years passed and the statue started to decay, John Bryden instituted the idea to conserve the monument. It was taken down , refurbished and replaced in 1985.
