WTC sphere. The Sphere: 9/11 Tribute
I had no idea this was here. There were a couple people around and several floral wreaths in front of the sculpture, indicating active participation with the monument.

Battered Sphere - Sept. 11th Tribute
A few blocks south of the scarred pit that was once the World Trade Center, a quiet tree lined park is home to a sculptural memorial. "The Sphere" actually stood in the WTC plaza for 30 years before those same buildings fell on it. Artist Fritz Koenig created The Sphere as "a symbol of world peace."

Amid the rubble of Sept. 11, 2001, The Sphere was one of the few art pieces salvaged, and was erected as a "temporary memorial" on March 11, 2002 to those who lost their lives. Being modern and abstract, it may be hard to imagine what The Sphere looked like before the attack (similar, with less cracks and dings).

An eternal flame, ignited Sept. 11, 2002, continues to burn in front of The Sphere."
