The Louvre Museum once served as the French Royal Palace.
In Madame de Lafayette's novel "The Princesse de Cleves", the title character is a member of the Queen's retinue. The action takes place between October 1558 and November 1559 at the royal court of Henry II of France.
The plot surrounds the difficulties that the Princesse has dealing with the obvious flirtations of Monsieur de Nemours- even though she is married (loyally if not lovingly) to Monsieur de Clèves. The Princesse is successful in hiding her interest in her pursuer...to everyone but her husband. She, in fact, tells her husband that she has an admirer without revealing his identity... but her husband already has his suspicions. With the exception of brief moments at the Princesse's home and country estate, all the other action takes place here at the Louvre.
Short Description: Court intriques at the Louvre- then the royal Palace.
