Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking the city of Barcelona. It is the tallest mountain in the area. Located at the top of the mountain are an amusement park and a famous Catholic basilica called the Expiatory Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church is especially known for the big statue of Jesus located at the top of it. The church and the statue are visible from almost every point in the city.

The enormous bronze statue of the Sacred Heart was made by Josep Miret in 1950, replacing the original made by Frederic Marès in 1935, and destroyed the following year. The ascent from the crypt, passing through the church and ending at the sculpture, reflects the rise and the purification of the human condition by means of sacrifice and atonement.

Jesus, also referred to as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ, is the central figure of Christianity, whom the teachings of most Christian denominations hold to be the Son of God. Christians believe Jesus is the awaited Messiah of the Old Testament.

Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Galilean, Jewish rabbi who preached his message orally, was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified by the order of the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate. After Jesus' death, his followers believed he was resurrected, and the community they formed eventually became the Christian church.

The widely used calendar era, abbreviated as "AD" from the Latin "Anno Domini" ("in the year of our Lord") or sometimes as "CE", is based on the birth of Jesus. His birth is celebrated annually on December 25 as a holiday known as Christmas.

The visit to the temple is free of charge but if you would like to enjoy the spectacular views from the very top of the church, you need to take a lift for a small fee (2.50 euros). The lift is operational between 10:30 and 14:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00.
