ABOUT THE STATUE:

"The Luther Memorial in Hanover is a bronze statue of the reformer Martin Luther in the center of the capital of Lower Saxony. It is located on the right (south) side of the main portal of the church market.

History

The design of 1899 created Dopmeyer Carl, who died in the same year. Ferdinand Hartzer completed the monument in it. On November 10, 1900, the birthday of Luther, it was unveiled. Originally, the statue of Luther standing on a more than three feet high pedestal. At lower pedestals to his sides Elisabeth and Ernst von Calenberg were shown sitting, who had prepared the way for the Reformation in the Guelph duchies. The location was in the middle of the south side of the Market Church.

1941 should see the three statues to be melted down for war purposes. However, the Luther statue remained lying on a meeting place in Hamburg and returned after the war to Hanover. In 1952 the monument today's less exposed location and the unadorned gray base. After the Old Town Festival 1976, it plunged and had to be re-erected. A basic stadium was renovated in 2001/02.

The Hanover Luther monument shows the reformer upright in Professor gowns. With his left hand he presses the closed Bible to the heart, where the folds of the robe suggests a previous move. The right is raised to the oath gesture. The left foot steps on a entsiegeltes and unfolded document: 1521 excommunicated the papal bull DECET Roman Pontificem, with the Pope Leo X. Luther in January. The oath gesture realizes the moment of withdrawal refusal on the Diet of Worms, a few weeks later, the help with the formula eidähnlichen God to me. Amen concluded."

ABOUT THE MAN:

"Martin Luther (10 November 1483 – 18 February 1546) was a German priest, professor of theology and iconic figure of the Protestant Reformation. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. He confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor.
