The Williams River is a major source of drinking water for the Hunter Valley region, and has been dammed by the Chichester Dam a bit further up stream. The pipeline crosses the Williams River here, and a fishway was created to allow fish migration.

There is an information board on the southern side of Williams River explaining the reason for the need of the fishway and how it works.
"In 2003 joint co-ordination between Hunter Water, Department of Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources and NSW Fisheries resulted in the construction of a rock ramp fishway at Bandon Grove. The project was funded by Hunter Water."
"The new fishway now covers the pipeline, allowing native fish to migrate upstream and get to important habitat in the river."
"The new fishway mimics the natural 'riffles' of the Williams River and provides a gentle slope so that fish can swim over the weir."
"Native fish need to move around the river for breeding, food and to find suitable habitat. Many species, such as Australian Bass, must migrate to the sea every year to spawn."
"Better fish passage improves habitats and means healthier native fish populations. The Hunter has 15 species of native freshwater fish, all of these can be found in the Williams River:
* Australian Bass
* Freshwater Mullet
* Freshwater Catfish
* Long-Finned Eel
* Short-Finned Eel
* Australian Smelt
* Freshwater Herring
* Mountain Galaxias
* Striped Gudgeon
* Dwarf Flathead Gudgeon
* Flathead Gudgeon
* Cox's Gudgeon
* Empire Gudgeon
* Striped Mullet
* Bullrout

In memory of Dr John Holliday - NSW Fisheries"
