In Norwood, along Washington Street, is the St. Catherine of Siena School, which has on its wall this colorful coat of arms.
The feature is on the southeast facing wall of the school that is near Washington Street and its easy to spot from the road. The coat of arms is about head high and is an integral part of the wall. On a white tile background, is a shield with an elaborate red cord design framing it, and a golden banner below it. At the top of the shield is a hat on the left, a double cross in the center, and curled staff head on the right. The shield has two designs split vertically. On the left represents the Archdiocese of Boston - there there is a cross over three hills - the trimount of the Boston Peninsula - before they used the dirt to fill the bays. On the right is a red cross with a book with "X" and "P" on it, three shells near the cross points, and a staff in the middle.
This heraldry represents Cardinal Richard Cushing, who headed the Boston Archdiocese from 1944 to 1970. During his life, he was seen as a builder of relations between different groups within Boston.
