STOCKPORT HERITAGE TRUST

LANCASHIRE
BRIDGE
First mentioned in 1282.
The crossing point between
Cheshire and Lancashire which
gave Stockport its importance.
The current bridge dates from 1891.

THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOCKPORT
In 1937 the bridge became hidden when the road layout was changed and a concrete culvert over the river built next to the eastern side of the bridge.

The River Mersey on the western side of the bridge was then also covered over in 1965 so that a shopping centre could be built over the River.

When structural problems were discovered with the concrete bridge on the eastern side it was decided to remove part of it and repair the original stone arch.

The work was completed in July 2015 and the eastern side of the bridge and the River Mersey is now visible again for the first time in 78 years.

A new stone parapet was built for the bridge, and placed on it was the original plaque from when the bridge was built in 1891. This had been placed into the pavement when the bridge was covered in 1937.
