On September 26 & 27, 2015, artists in Whitby, Ontario, painted murals on nine Bell Canada outdoor utility boxes as part of Culture Days. The project was a partnership between Bell Canada, Community Matters Toronto, Town of Whitby, Station Gallery, Whitby Downtown Development Office, Whitby Chamber of Commerce, Whitby Blooms, and the Old Whitby Neighbourhood Association. Paint was donated by Benjamin Moore Paint.
Quote from the artist Sarah Shaw, 1501 Brock St. South
"My Bell box mural has been painted with a Harbour theme. To the left there is the lighthouse on the pier from 100 years ago, and the bare landscape prior to the development and progress of our community. All painted in muted sepia tones - to relate to photos you would see of our history.
The mural then transitions into today’s era with the Whitby Yacht Club and vibrant colours. On the back I painted the HMCS Whitby as a tribute to our Veterans while incorporating our history, as well as a continuation of our water’s edge with the cliffs currently located at Heydenshore waterfront. There were 2 additional boxes in very close proximity to my Bell box, and it only seemed appropriate to paint those as well."
