Seit 1871 besteht Anschluss an das Bahnnetz, zunächst auf der Bahnstrecke Gera–Neustadt–Eichicht. Heute fahren im stündlichen Wechsel eine Regionalbahn-Linie EB 33 auf der Strecke Gera–Neustadt–Saalfeld und ein Regional-Express-Linie EBx12 auf der Strecke Leipzig–Gera–Neustadt–Saalfeld. Damit bestehen direkte Anschlüsse an die beiden ICE-Knotenbahnhöfe Saalfeld (Saale) und Leipzig. Es findet regelmäßiger Güterverkehr statt, jedoch wird kein Wagenladungsverkehr mehr abgewickelt.
