Shaw Logging Railroad
1906-1917
The Shaw Railroad was possibly the only privately owned and operated logging railroad in Saskatchewan. Pioneer lumbermen, James and Thomas Shaw of Dauphin, Manitoba operated a sawmill an planing mill on the E.1/2 Sec..7-45-7-W2nd, just west of the present Hamlet of Prairie River. Logs were hauled 22 miles from Bjork Lake by sleigh in the early years using steam log haulers called "centipedes". Lack of snow caused problems with the centipedes and led the Shaw brothers to venture in the construction of a railroad around 1910. The tracks crossed this point on route from Prairie River to Bjork Lake. The Railroad was operational for several years and used as shay Class "B" Type Geared Locomotive. PRWL
