The refuge is near the Pee Dee River. It has 8,443 acres in both Richmond and Anson Counties. Part of the Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge is a haven for migrating waterfowl in winter. It is a magnificent birdwatching site. In addition to waterfowl habitat, it is blessed with a large whitetail deer population and a sizeable bobwhite population. Hunting is permitted in season for deer and bobwhite as well as other usual small mammals.xxxx
