As the plaque reads:
Melfort's Original Pioneers
In 1884, the first white settlers, Reginald and Mary Beatty, arrived in this district. They homesteaded the NE 20-44-18-2, which is two miles south and one half mile east of the present town. Until 1891, when other settlers arrived in the district. The Beatty's had close neighbors and few visitors yet their strong pioneer spirit helped them survive the hardships. In 1904, when the railroad arrived and established the location of the present town site, Mary Beatty was given the honor to naming the new settlement; she named the town "Melfort" after her family's estate in Scotland.
