Binnacle from the SS Terra Nova:

"On 15 June 1910, the 'British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13', led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, made its final departure from Cardiff on the SS Terra Nova.

The expedition team had forged strong links with the City of Cardiff and the business community of its docks. The people of Cardiff raised almost half of the total funds needed for the expedition.

The vessel was equipped with the Standard Compass and Binnacle, which was positioned on top of the Ice House of the Terra Nova.

Scott and his team reached the South Pole on 18 January 1912, but all five members of the party perished in the Antarctic's icy conditions.

After the Terra Nova's home voyage to Cardiff in 1913, the Binnacle was presented to the Royal Navy.

It is now on loan to the Pierhead from the Royal Navy Trophy Centre with the kind assistance of the Captain Scott Society." Text Source; (visit link)
