Pastor Sven Njaa, 1870-1972
This Norwegian Lutheran Missionary preached in a 100 mile area between Canwood and Star City from 1903 to 1913, physically robust, he travelled by buggy and sleigh. He was able to work with people of differing view and instead of money he was often paid in food for his family and horses.
Njaa took teacher training in Norway, attended seminary in St. Paul Minnesota and was ordained in 1899. In 1913 he began serving three rural congregations and was rector of the hospital and home for the aged in Northwood, North Dakota for 35 years continuing as rector until age 99. From 1914 to 1954 he edited Emissaren in English and Norwegian for the institutions.
"Prestehaugen" (Pastor´s Hill, the site of his home was on the Northwest corner of this quarter section, his homestead he sold in 1949 to build a new home in North Dakota.
