The Thomas J. Malone Bridge is a 42 foot long covered bridge that spans a small stream on Echo Dell Road in Beaver Creek State Park, Columbiana County, Ohio. The bridge is located about 4 miles northwest of Calcutta, Ohio. The bridge was built in either 1865 or 1870 and previously spanned Middle Run, on State Route 154, between Lisbon and Elkton. It is no longer an active bridge supporting vehicle traffic, but rather is on display. It has an altered multiple kings post truss and has an unknown load limit. The bridge is a natural wood perhaps stained dark brown and has either wood or slate shingled roof. The overall condition of the bridge is excellent. It has been reconditioned and preserved quite well in its present location. The bridge has no graffiti. We could not find a date or plaque on the bridge. There is a large parking lot a short distance from the bridge. There is an Ohio State Historical Marker describing the bridge adjacent to it. We have included the text of the marker here because of the interesting history associated with this bridge.
Text From Ohio Historical Marker # 7-15
Thomas J. Malone Bridge
This covered bridge stood in the 1870s over Middle Run, on State Route 154, between Lisbon and Elkton, Elkrun Township. It was converted to a storage shed and moved twice by the Elkrun Township Trustees. Mr. Malone, a covered bridge researcher, found the structure along the Pine Hollow Road and recognized it as a covered bridge. Restoration was completed in 1971.
The bridge is situated with Gaston Mill, a log cabin, a early 19th century church and school on the State Park grounds. All of the displayed structures including the bridge have been nicely restored.
