Macon Missouri was once the home of a Toastmaster Plant. The company was best known for, you guessed it, Toasters. The plant was closed in 2000 and the manufacturing was sent overseas. Now the building is Compton's Discount Store. When visiting the store you can see a lot of artifacts from the plant still in place.

"MT. PROSPECT, IL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2000

Salton, Inc. (NYSE: SFP), today announced that it is restructuring its Toastmaster(R) Inc. manufacturing facility located in Macon, Missouri.

Following extensive evaluation of the manufacturing facility and its related costs, Salton has identified several cost-effective measures and benefits associated with transitioning the manufacturing process from the Macon plant to lower-cost overseas vendors. The restructuring is expected to affect a total of 470 employees with layoffs occurring between October and December 2000. The facility, which currently manufactures Toastmaster(R) Toasters and certain toaster oven broilers, will be converted into a distribution center. Approximately 70 employees will be retained to coincide with the operations transition from a manufacturing plant to a distribution facility.

Leon Dreimann, Chief Executive Officer of Salton, Inc., commented, "In an effort to retain as many employees as possible, while simultaneously identifying cost-effective measures in which to strengthen our infrastructure and in particular our production facilities, we have decided to transform our Macon manufacturing plant into a distribution facility. Our decision to close the Missouri facility was a difficult process. In the interests of enhancing shareholder value, it was a decision we had to make after analyzing the present costs associated with the manufacturing process. We will be transitioning our manufacturing operations to lower cost vendors, and this is consistent with the Company's original 1999 acquisition plan of Toastmaster."
