Castine is a location very dense with history, and the Castine Historic District has representations listed that span from colonial times through the War of 1812.

Castine is located on the eastern side of Penobscot Bay. There are several ways to get to it, but there is only one road that leads into the town.

At the intersection with Wadsworth Cove Street, there is a bronze plaque that states:

"Castine Historic District
Placed in the
National Register
of Historic Places
By the United States
Department of the Interior
February 23, 1973
Castine Historic Preservation Commission"

This sign is by a waterway that has a sign next to it stating:

"British Canal 1779"

The historic district covers the entire peninsula. The nomination form has a map of the peninsula and marks locations around it. Driving around, there are many historic signs about events or landmarks from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s.

Many of the markings on the map include buildings along main Street in the center of town. Also in the town are remnants of fortified locations including the remains of Ft. Georges, which was the focus of a failed attempt by a naval and marine expedition from Massachusetts to recapture the town. Fort Georges and Fort Madison also were present during the War of 1812, and were occupied by the British again.
