After Gen Hull's surrender at Detroit, most of the Michigan Territory cane under British rule. Gen William Harrison decided to use the Auglaize and St Marys rivers to move supplies rather then try to cross the Blak Swamp. In Novemner 1812 he ordered Lt Col. Pogue to construct a supply depot at this site, previously an Ottawa villiage. Pogue named the fort after his daughter Hannah "Amanda". Initially the fort consisted of 4 blockhouses connected by palisades and was 160 feet by 160 feet. The fort was controlled by Kentucky troops until February 1813 when Ohio militia took over command. Capt. Hosbrook enlarged the fort when it became a key debarkation point for supplies and troops heading north in an effort to recapture Detroit.
Fort Amanda was abandoned by the military in 1815 and then was occupied by local settlers.
