This benchmark is described in the document "Results of Spirit Leveling In Arizona, 1899-1915, inclusive", US Dept. of Interior, US Geoplical Survey, R.B. Marshall, Chief Geographer. It is also recorded on a US Geological Survey Topographic Map dated 1904. The elevation at the site was determined to be 1,344.108'.

The documentation is somewhat dated in the sense that roads are described that are no longer in use and modern roads are not shown.

The written description states that the benchmark can be found as follows: "Arizona Dam, 0.7 mile northeast of, west of mouth of Verde River north side of Salt River, on south side of road from Frazers to Cuba, south of large red butte and at west end of small red butte." The large red butte is today known as Coon Bluff and the benchmark can most easily be accessed from Phon D. Sutton Recreation Area. The road from "Frazers to Cuba" is no longer in use or accessible to vehicle travel.

Caution: A "Tonto Pass" is required to park in the Phon D. Sutton Recreation Area. Passes are available at gas stations and stores along Power Rd. before you get to Tonto National Forest.

To locate the site from Mesa Arizona, drive north on Power Rd. to Salt River Recreation Area (Tonto National Forest, Lower Salt River). Power Rd. turns into Bush Hwy. in the Tonto National Forest. Driving east on Bush Hwy. turn left (north) on Phon D. Sutton Rd. and proceed to the farthest east parking area. In the northeast end of the parking area look for a path leading east along the river terrace (do not go all of the way down to the river). Follow the path past picnic tables and cliffs. Continue on the path until a fence blocking a steep wash is encountered. The marker is below the path and north towards the river embedded on the surface of the east end of a long rock bench. Just below the benchmark is a large concrete enclosure.
