Inside the palace, peacocks are a recurring motif in frescoes, paintings and sculptures. Mor Chowk, originally built in 1620, was decorated with mosaics of dancing peacocks by Rana Sajjan Singh in 1874. It is one of the most elegant part of the City Palace. The courtyard is open to sky and was used to host dinner banquets for the guests of the Royal family.
The elaborate design of Mor Chowk consists of three peacocks (representing the three seasons of summer, winter and monsoon) modeled in high relief and faced with coloured glass mosaic, built into successive niches in the wall area or jharoka. The peacocks have been crafted with 5000 pieces of glass, which shine in green, gold and blue colours. Our pictures show two of the three peacocks.
