This marker indicates the position of the 19th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the assault on Missionary Ridge during the Battle of Missionary Ridge, fought November 25, 1863. This Battle was part of the Chattanooga Campaign and is preserved and maintained as part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The regiment was commanded by Lieut. Col. Alexander W. Raffen. This marker is located on S. Crest Road, Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, TN.

Short Significance Description:

Marker contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position on November 25, 1863, at 5:00 p.m.


Long Physical Description

Marker located at 212 South Crest Road/1934 Map 146 along Missionary Ridge.
