Millions of years in the making, the Železné hory (Iron Mountains) offer visitors a wide variety of geological phenomena. In Vápenný Podol at the edge of former lime quarry it has been recently created one of the posts of the educational trail of National Geo Park Železné hory (Iron Mountains). On display there are a number of various rocks which were quarried at this side of the mountains.
The territory of the Iron Mountains National Geopark with an area of 777.5 km2 is located within the Pardubice Region and stretches all the way to the Vysocina Region. It spreads between Chrudim to the north and Chotebor to the south, Chvaletice to the northwest and Nový Hrady to the east. It is basically formed by the entire Iron Mountains, which are more hilly with few peaks exceeding 660 m above seal level.
However, it is an area formed by significant geological units. With a bit of exaggeration we can say that the geopark combines geology of the entire Czech Republic in a relatively small area and that it is a sort of outdoor textbook on geology or a puzzle, which can be pieced together in a very short period of time – 2-3 days.
The territory of the geopark holds more than one hundred significant geotopes, which are exceptional scientific and geo-tourist locales, where you can observe unique geoscience phenomena. They are often also a biotope, or habitat, which is populated with many living organisms. Geotopes can be divided into five categories (Proterozoic, Plutonic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic, Hydrogeology) according to the geoscience jurisdiction. The geopark logo is based on this and is created from five panels that together form a picture of the Iron Mountains.
