EN: A tectonic window is an area, where the underlying geological base of a tectonic thrust system is revealed by erosion.
The High Chain Jura was folded by the tectonic movement of the African plate towards Europe before approximately five to ten million years ago, and pushed at its northern boundary over the unfolded Table Jura. At Oberkirch, erosion has produced a hole in this nappe, so that at this location the ground is geologically older than its surroundings.
The small plateau Oberkirch between Zullwil and Nunningen is the only known tectonic window in the Jurassic Range. Its chalky soil is very different from the marl and clay layers in the rest of the valley.
The coordinates are from a location, where this window is good to overview and a detailed information board is located. It is in a window on the north wall of the ruins of Gilgenberg Castle.

Der Faltenjura wurde durch die tektonische Bewegung der afrikanischen Platte auf Europa vor ungefähr fünf bis zehn Millionen Jahren aufgefaltet und an seinem Nordrand über den ungefalteten Tafeljura geschoben. Bei Oberkirch ist seither diese Überlagerung durch Erosion wieder freigelegt, so dass an dieser Stelle der Boden geologisch älter ist als seine Umgebung.
Die kleine Hochebene Oberkirch zwischen Zullwil und Nunningen ist das einzige bekannte tektonisches Fenster im Jura. Sein kalkhaltiger Boden unterscheidet sich stark von den Mergel- und Tonschichten im Rest des Tales.
Die Koordinaten sind von einer Stelle, wo dieses Fenster gut zu Überblicken ist und sich eine ausführliche Infotafel befindet, in einem Fenster an der Nordwand der Ruine Gilgenstein.
