Youngstown is a village of around 2,000 year-round residents located on the tip of the Niagara escarpment north of Niagara Falls. It is the location of Fort Niagara, located at the mouth of the Niagara River as it empties into Lake Ontario.

The town traces its roots to French traders in the area in the late 17th century. It was sacked and burned by the British during the War of 1812. Gradual rebuilding took place and by the 1840's the village was once again thriving. It was incorporated in 1854.

Today, the village bases its income mainly on the tourist trade.

The welcome sign at the public docks prominently features the Fort Niagara Lighthouse, located just north of here in Fort Niagara State Park, and several billowing sails, in tribute to the sailing and tourism heritage of this area.
