When the St. Nicolaas church was rebuilt almost 400 years ago, every day a lady would come riding by. She would smile onto the builder, and he could not keep his thoughts to the work at hand. The calculations and drawings got behind. The sheriff of Drenthe spoke with the lord of Batinghe manor who spoke with his daughter. She would want no-one but the builder.
Her father understood and sent her away. Though before she left, she rode past the church one more time. When the moon appeared to be shining through the trees, she saw the new tower peak in front of her.
The lady saw the builder at work, got off her horse and expressed how much she liked what she had seen and how well it looked. Only then she got on her horse and set out on her journey. That night the builder finished his job.
The sheriff approved everything, even though what was delivered did not look at all usual or common for Drenthe. A year passed and the church of St. Nicolaas had its crowning. The lady returned to witness the consecration and the Sheriff blessed the two young people without whom there never would have been such an amazing construction...
