The Sussex Express website has an article about the plaque and Elisabeth Howard:

Plaque dedicated to campaigner Elisabeth Howard in Lewes.

A plaque and memorial cycle rack in honour of veteran campaigner Elisabeth Howard was unveiled last week in Southover Grange Gardens, Lewes.

The ceremony was performed by Carolyn Lambert, chair of the Lewes District Council, and Robert Cheesman, chairman of the Friends of Lewes.

One of the best known figures in Lewes throughout the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, Elisabeth Howard was an extremely effective campaigner for improving the county town.

Born in Seaford, she settled in the Lewes area in the 1960s.

One of her first campaign successes was saving the Needlemakers building in Lewes from demolition.

It now houses a thriving range of businesses.

Elisabeth had a brief spell as a Labour town councillor in Lewes but was perhaps better suited to seeking change as an ordinary member of the public.

She fought to keep the Pells swimming pool open and was one of many people who vigorously campaigned for Lewes to have a new library.

Elisabeth was instrumental in the campaign against the proposal to route the A27 through the middle of Lewes and for the creation of the Cuilfail tunnel to take traffic out of the town centre.

She fought off proposals for development of the old railway land, which Tesco wanted to build a supermarket on and which is now a nature reserve.

She was always formidably briefed about any of her causes; councillors and officials used to dread seeing her approach although she was a kindly woman. She died in 2006.

District council boss Mrs Lambert said: "I have very fond memories of her dashing around everywhere at top speed on her bicycle.

"I also remember her in the unlikely role of matchmaker. She introduced me to the man that became my husband.

"She was just the most delightful, warm-hearted and hard-working woman."

Friends chairman Mr Cheesman said: "For many years Elisabeth was a strong supporter of the Friends of Lewes and its objective of conserving Lewes.

"She did much to galvanise public support formany projects. She will be remembered by many for riding a heavily laden bicycle to meetings and we therefore thought it fitting that this memorial to her should take the form of a bicycle rack."
