In the days before fish food pellets, fish were fed ground meat. Unfortunately, the differing sizes of meat resulted in differing sizes of fingerlings. The sorter was used to separate the small fish from the larger ones, thereby preventing cannibalism and improving inventory accuracy.

The sorter was placed in a tank and mechanically rocked to separate the different sizes.
