A 10' high bronze sculpture of a Union flag bearer and an infantryman stand on top of a 15' high granite base. The sculpture was created by Edwin E. Codman, fabricated at the Jones Brothers Company, and cast by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The monument was erected by John K. Cullin and dedicated on July 4, 1916.
Two life size, uniformed, Union soldiers, a flag bearer and an infantryman, stand side by side. The flag bearer is holding up the flag with his left arm while he is reaching around his waist to hold the handle of a sheathed sword with his right hand. The infantryman stands to the flag bearer's left. He stands with his left leg forward while holding a rifle with fixed bayonet in his right hand.
The front of the base is inscribed:
ERECTED BY
JOHN K. CULLIN
IN MEMORY OF THE
SOLDIERS & SAILORS
WHO DEFENDED
OUR COUNTRY AND FLAG
1861 TO 1865
Below a long rectangular bronze plaque contains a bas relief sculpture of the naval battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac.
On the back is a bronze plaque with the heading HILLSDALE COMRADES contains nine columns with the regiments and names of 148 citizens from Hillsdale and nearby areas who served in the Civil War.
