The local authorities have agreed that this bridge may be used as a love padlock bridge. It is estimated that each 'fence' can hold up to approx. 1200 padlocks.
About the bridge (Dutch):
De Rijnhavenbrug, regionaal bekend als de Hoerenloper is een voetgangers- en fietsersbrug over de Rijnhaven in Rotterdam, die een verbinding vormt tussen de Wilhelminapier bij Hotel New York en Katendrecht. Deze brug kort de reistijd tussen Katendrecht en Rotterdam Centrum in, omdat de route langs de Rijnhaven dan kan worden afgesneden. Tevens is de brug de entree voor de SS Rotterdam.
De bouw van de brug had volgens plan eind 2010 gereed moeten zijn. De gemeente heeft 8 miljoen euro begroot voor de brug. De architect moest de brug zo ontwerpen dat het een slanke/transparante brug zou worden, die een "krachtig en eenvoudig beeld heeft". De eerste paal voor de brug is geslagen op 16 februari 2011. De constructie is aangevangen in de zomer van 2011. De oplevering van de brug vond plaats op 8 februari 2012. De brug is 160 meter lang, waarbij de rijbanen voor voetgangers en fietsers niet gescheiden zijn. Er geldt wel een brommerverbod op de brug. Ten slotte kan een deel van de brug ook open voor de scheepvaart.
English abstract:
The Rijnhavenbrug, regionaly known as the “Whore hopper” is a 160 meters long pedestrian and cycle bridge over the river Rhine in Rotterdam. It forms a connection between the Wilhelmina Pier, Hotel New York and a quarter of Rotterdam called Katendrecht (where the prostitutes used to be) .
The bridge was completed on February 8, 2012.
