In 1864, the original courthouse was burned by Union troops under the command of General A. J. "Whiskey" Smith. Following the Civil War the present courthouse was as built and complete in January 1872. The courthouse sits on the courthouse square, which is surrounded by a variety of gourmet restaurants, home décor shops, upscale clothing boutiques and coffee shops.
