John F. Cox Grammar School opened in 1928 and continued to serve the community until 1990. The two story brick building is one of several local schools constructed during the 1920s, as the population of Lakeland increased. The school was named for Mayor John F. Cox, who served from 1905 to 1907, 1911, 1916, and 1917. Cox was a local businessman and president of the Polk County Board of Realtors; he died in 1924.
The school building was purchased by the Watson Clinic Foundation and renovated for use as the Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine (LVIM) Clinic in 2001. LVIM -- an independent non profit organization -- provides free, high-quality primary healthcare to the working uninsured of Lakeland.
The structure is presently known as the Hilda Sutton and William D. Blanton Building.
For benchmark fans, check out the marvleous benchmark on the west face of the northwest corner of the building.
