Located at the south end of Veterans Memorial Park Cemetery is a nautical flag pole which contains a stand-alone plaque monumented on a metal pole that reads:

James L. Parks

CWWII Navy Veteran serving from 12/1939-11/1945 in both the Pacific and European theaters and resident of the Sonoma Valley since 1946 James L. Parks, after raising his family and running his own business, dedicated his efforts to honor our Veterans. He conceived of the idea, assembled the many talented people for the design and development, and persevered through all the public and private requirements to complete the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park. James Parks funded the construction of the "Star of Honor" Fountain in the Park. Toward further honoring Veterans, he then directed his efforts toward obtaining national recognition of the locally designed "Veterans Remembered Flag".

MAY ALL THOSE WHO SERVED ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED

What's interesting about this particular memorial is that the City of Sonoma Veterans Association has been trying to create a flag specific to all Veterans of the Armed Services. They have designed a flag for this purpose and have been trying to get more attention and recognition for this flag proposal. You can visit the "Veterans Remembered Flag" website at the link below.
