The Grade II listed building at 43 High Street, Wells is currently occupied by Vision Express. It's basically a shop with house over, there is possibly some C17th fabric incorporated, but the facade is C20th.
It is rendered over a timber frame with false ashlar joints scribed on, and colourwashed, The hipped double Roman clay tiled roof has a ridge at right angles to the road and is behind a parapet. There are two storeys, and it is two bays wide. It has a 1960s shop front to ground floor with mosaic pilaster, a deep fascia, and a recessed central double doorway between paired windows, one angled. Above, between two four-pane sash windows in plain surrounds, is the two-faced mid-C20th electric clock, projecting forward on metal brackets. The long rear wing includes one early C19th 16-pane sash, the roof has been rebuilt.
The upper floor has low ceilings, and there are some plank ledged doors. The feet only are exposed of what could be collar trusses, the centre with wall posts each end, that to the W side with jowelled head. On the landing, one crossbeam has chamfers without runout.
The clock faces are opaque white with black numerals. Above is an insert with the name of the owners. This also appears on the blanked-off outer end of the clock.
