EN: The Gallus Tower is located in the north-east of the old town on the bank of the Rhine.
In 1343 the city was hit by a severe flood, at that time it was on an island. The same year, the tower was added to the city walls at the tip of the island. The tower had a dual role as a watchtower and breakwaters.
After 1830, when the right branch of the river had been filled up, the tower had lost its intended purpose. For a while, it served as a poor home and later housed the municipal art collection. In 1973 the tower was taken over by the jester's guild and has since served as their clubhouse and "bulwark against tribulation".

1343 wurde die Stadt, die sich damals noch auf einer Insel befand, von einer schweren Überschwemmung heimgesucht. Noch im selben Jahr wurde der Turm an der Inselspitze in die Stadtmauer eingefügt. Der Turm hatte eine doppelte Funktion als Wachtturm und Wellenbrecher.
Nachdem 1830 der rechte Flussarm zugeschüttet worden war, hatte der Turm seine Bedeutung verloren. Er diente noch eine Zeit als Armenheim und beherbergte später die städtische Kunstsammlung. 1973 wurde der Turm von der Narrenzunft übernommen und dient seither als ihr Vereinslokal und "Bollwerk gegen Trübsal".
