The plaque says, "More than 250 producing oil wells once dotted these hills. Owned or leased by Shell Oil, Columbia Oil, Pacific Gasoline, Birth Oil, and General Petroleum, they pumped more than 2,775,000 barrels of oil per year in an area little more than two square miles.

Olinda was an early twentieth-century boom town with more than 3,000 residents. between about 1900 and 1925, this community boasted a church, mercantile, grocery stores, bakery, barber shop, dance hall, community hall, 700 dwellings, and one of the richest school districts in Orange County. Many of the Oil workers lived here with their families in small, company-owned houses, and the surrounding hillside provided an incapable playground.

Today, very few building from this once thriving community remain, and only a handful of working oil rigs. However, their presence-and the stories left by those who worked in the oil fields-provide a rich history of what life was like on the oil leases after the initial well-the first in Orange County-was drilled in 1896."
