Red Beds Trail
The red stone of the Spearfish Formation is the oldest geologic layer visible in the park, dating back more then 300 million years.
One Tower, Many Experiences
On only a few miles of trail you will pass through three different habitats - ponderosa pine forest, open prairie, and the brightly colored mud and sandstones of the Spearfish Formation. If you walk quietly, you might catch sight of a bluebird, deer, or wild turkey.
Close to the Belle Fourche River, water has carved the red sedimentary layers into a maze of steep ravines. The trail there is slippery when wet.
Be Careful on the Red Bed Trail
• The trail is unpaved and moderately difficult.
• Wear good walking shoes and take water with you
• Avoid poison ivy
• Do Not approach rattlesnakes
