A landmark on the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route, this handsome truss bridge over the Pecos still stands on the former OST. Today this bridge carries the State Highway 290 over the mythical Pecos river. In 1926, when the advent of the US highway system replaced the old lyrical names of highways with numbers, this road was designated US 290. At the time, the US 290 followed the route of the OST from San Antonio to El Paso.

Today's SH 290 preserves this original route of the OST, and is designated scenic loop through this desolate yet breathtaking country.
