The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is known as Bell's Lane swing bridge and carries Bell's Lane over the canal.

It is an automated electric steel bridge complete with barriers and warning lights. It was built around 1990 and replaced an older timber bridge. link

The control panel is operated with a key that boat owners carry with them.

The bridge is only wide enough for single file traffic and has a weight limit of 7.5 tons.
