In Barre, along VT Route 14, is Hope Cemetery, which has this grave marker featuring a large, exactly made soccer ball.
The cemetery is on the west side of the road, just outside of the city. The grave is near a corner at a junction of paved cemetery roads, in the middle of the cemetery.
The marker is a gray granite structure carved as a soccer ball on a mostly cubic pedestal. The seams are actually grooves in the stone in the hexagon-pentagon pattern common in soccer balls.
Engraved in the ball is the name, "DAVIS." Also engraved is the following text:
"There is no room for second place, there's only one place and that's first place."
On the pedestal is the following on one side:
"Every yesterday-
a dream of happiness
Every tomorrow-
A vision of hope.
[rings]
6-14-69"
On another side,
"Dedication"
then a symbol and dates, Jul. 1, 1972 Dec. 2, 1985
At the base is
"Dec. 25, 1945 Robert M. Dec. 2, 1985
Sept 26, 1946 Harriet B. "
This monument is among many unusual monuments at this cemetery. It is well worth a trip to spend some time.
I cannot find anything about whether soccer was his vocation or avocation. I entered 'hobby' until I find a more definitive answer. Whichever, it must have been a big part of his life.
