Currently the library has approximately 21,600 volumes and serves a population area of approximately 3,600 residents.
The Carnegie Public Library was the culmination of a 10-year effort by the leading women in Dell Rapids to have a modern library constructed in town. Industrialist Andrew Carnegie offered $6,000 toward the building if the City would pledge $500 annually for operating expenses.
The library provides a variety of materials including books, magazines, newspapers, books on tape, videos, and large-print books. The library also offers the following programs and services to the community:
Reading programs for children and young adults.
Book delivery within the city limits for members of the library.
Inter-Library loan for patrons interested in materials not in the local collection.
Internet access and software utilization on seven computer terminals.
The mission of the Carnegie Public Library of Dell Rapids is to uphold the public's freedom of access to information and promote the use of materials and services meeting the needs of the personal, educational, and professional community.
The library is governed by a six-member Library Board of Trustees. Current members are Virginia Miller, Tom Earley, Sharon Judd, James Borchert, Kim Gaul and Mary Klockman.
