It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

At this point the milestone is 106.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 21 miles from the port of Liverpool.

This particular milestone is in bad condition and hard to read. It looks like it has been damaged in the past, because it is only half the height of other examples. The milestones on this canal normally have two plates showing the distance to both Leeds and Liverpool, but in this case the Liverpool plate is missing.
