'The first Eisenhower Green Ash was planted at the French Embassy in Washington D.C. in 2000. As suggested by its name, the tree honors Dwight D. Eisenhower, the U.S president who planned and supervised one of the most important Allied forces attack, the Normandy invasion.' Source

'Inspired by the planting at the French Embassy, other green ash trees have been planted around the country at various sites commemorating WWII veterans. This was called Operation Silent Witness. The Scotts Company and Wal-Mart teamed up with the VFW Foundation, American Forests and the VFW Foundation to pay tribute to World War II veterans by planting living monuments. Between Memorial Day (May 28th) and D-Day (June 6th), in 2001, thousands of green ash trees were planted by 2,500 VFW Posts and at the Wal-Mart Headquarters, the Bush Presidential Library, and other locations. Each tree was a direct descendant of the green ash tree growing at the birthplace of President Eisenhower in Dennison Texas.' Source

Near the tree, there is a sign. It has faded and it is stained, making it hard to read. Here is what it says :

Here in Virginia Beach, we do not presume to establish a
memorial of national grandeur but a humble place where our
citizens can pause and remember the price paid for their
freedom. Many will come by this place and only see a tree.
Others will see a tribute.
This is a special tree, not only for those it stands
to honor. It is a tree grown from seeds picked from the branches
of the green ash tree that shades the Texas birthplace of Dwight
D. Eisenhower. A small white clapboard house was where his
life began - and what would our world be like without his
strength, courage, leadership and perseverance?
It is fitting that this tree wil remind us of Ikes's gifts
and sacrifice of so many americans who served alongside him.
Location of the tree: This tree is located in the Flame of Hope Memorial Park

Type of tree: Dwight D. Eisenhower Green Ash Tree
