Edith Bolling Wilson was born on October 15, 1872 in Wytheville, Virginia. Through her Father, Judge William Holcombe Bolling where was a descendant of Pocahontas, and her husband John Rolfe. Rolfe’s Granddaughter, Jane married Robert Bowling. In 1896, Edith met and married Norman Galt, a prosperous Washington D. C. Jeweler. Norman Galt died suddenly 1908 and the widow Edith continued to live in Washington, living sparsely due to the debt left behind by her husband. In March 1915 Edith was introduced to President Woodrow Wilson by Helen Bones. Bones was a cousin of President Wilson and was serving a White House Hostess since the Death of President Wilson’s first wife Ellen. President Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt were married on December 18, 1915 at her home in Washington. In October 1919, President Wilson suffered a stroke which left him partially paralyzed. For the remainder of his presidency, Edith strictly controlled access to the president and decided which matters were important enough to be brought directly to President Wilson. Her control over these matters lead some to refer to her as “the first woman president.” President Wilson completed his term as president and he and Edith retired to a home in Washington. There Edith continued to care for the president until his death on February 23, 1924. Follow the death of President Wilson, Edith continued to live in Washington until her death on December 28, 1961 at the age of 89.
